Senior Privileges & Policies PDF Print E-mail
Introduction

The New School of Northern Virginia strives to encourage student ownership and maturity, and this is particularly true with seniors. One of the goals of the senior year is to get seniors used to the idea of managing their own time and setting their own schedule, as they will have to do once they get to college. This does not mean that seniors get to come and go as they please or avoid their responsibilities.

Senior Lunch Out
The first privilege gained by seniors, the one that they receive simply because they are seniors, is the senior lunch out. All seniors can sign out to go to lunch once they have turned in the necessary forms. The forms needed by any senior to leave campus during lunch are as follows:

  • Field Trip Permission form

  • Medical Emergency Form

  • Parental Permission Form
  • All of these forms are required, regardless of the age of the student.

The policies regarding senior lunch out are as follows:

  •  Seniors must sign out and back in when going on senior lunch out. Students who fail to sign in or out risk losing their lunch privileges. Once a student signs out they must leave  you may not sign out and then remain on campus.

  •  Senior lunch out is only during lunch, 12:15 to 1:00. Students leaving earlier or later than that time risk losing their lunch privileges.

  •  Students may ride with fellow students (assuming that their parents have given them permission to do so.) Students may only ride with fellow students or faculty  no one else.

  •  Seniors may not bring back lunch for other students or for themselves. Students may bring back a soda (assuming their after lunch class allows them to drink sodas).

    Senior Study Hall Privilege

In addition to the Senior Lunch Out privilege, it is possible for seniors to earn the privilege to leave campus during their study hall time. This privilege is earned once a senior has completed their senior exhibition. In order to sign out during study hall, a student must also have all the appropriate forms turned in for leaving campus (see above). The policies regarding Senior Study Hall privilege are as follows:

  •  All students at The New School are registered for a class during every period of the day. The only reason a student would not be registered for a class is if that student is taking a college course or internship during that time period. Any such arrangement must be worked out with the High School Director.

  •  Seniors remain in study hall even though they are signing out of that study hall. It is the responsibility of the senior to talk to the teacher in charge of their study hall and let them know they are signing out during that time. A student must check in with their teacher every day to sign out, unless they get blanket approval to sign out every day. If a student has signed out of study hall ‘permanently’, they MUST leave campus every day during that time, but still signing out at the main office. No student is allowed to be around campus when they are not enrolled in a class there is no such thing as a “free period”.

  •  Students that are in trouble academically will not be allowed to use their study hall privilege. Any teacher can request to the High School Director that a senior be taken off of study hall privilege based on the student’s performance in their class.
  • Any student who violates any of the policies of Senior Study Hall privilege or Senior Lunch Out privilege risks having those privileges removed. In particular, any student who demonstrates that they are unable to handle the responsibility of leaving campus should expect to lose that privilege in all forms. This would be especially true of any student who clearly put other students or themselves into danger by their actions.

All of these forms are required, regardless of the age of the student.
