The Summer English Program is divided into two three-week long, half-credit classes. *Students from FCPS must take English Part I and 2 in order to earn credit. Cost per session: $950

The Summer Session One English course focuses on American short stories. Students read fourteen to sixteen stories, with selections ranging from Hawthorne to Hemingway to pieces from the top literary magazines of today. Students will discuss basic elements of fiction including plot, character, setting and theme and will also attempt to use the stories to form some ideas about the evolution of the American identity. Fiction is presented as an important facet of a full, thoughtful life.

The Summer Session Two English course focuses on the writing of nonfiction essays. Students practice writing both personal and persuasive essays while studying pieces by established authors, using them as models and guides. Students cover a variety of topics including the basics of rhetoric, the construction of clean, complex sentences and the appropriate designs for paragraphs and whole essays. Additionally, they explore the benefits of living a life examined.

The first semester of senior year is incredibly demanding, with students often struggling with the many challenges of college applications and essays, standardized tests, senior exhibitions, and school coursework. This three-week class is designed to help make the fall semester more manageable and to improve the overall quality of work produced. By focusing on the college application process and the senior exhibition over the summer, students are able to enter their senior year with many of their responsibilities completed, enabling them to focus on their classes and the senior exhibition.

This course will focus on:

* writing effective and compelling college application essays

* constructing a timeline for completing their senior exhibition benchmarks

* beginning the research and outline for their senior exhibition papers

Students interested in participating in this course are encouraged begin the college selection process this spring so they know which college essays to work on over the summer. Cost: $950

General Program information and payment policy

    • A $150 non-refundable deposit is required for each session block upon registration.
    • Only cash and checks are accepted. Make checks payable to The New School.
    • There is no school on July 4th in observance of Independence Day.
    • Each academic session block runs Monday through Friday for three weeks.
    • The maximum class size is 14-15.  Each course must have a minimum of 5 registered students to run the class.
    • There will be no pro-ration for days missed.
    • In the unlikely event that a session is cancelled, your deposit will be refunded.
    • After receiving your deposit, The New School will send confirmation that your deposit and registration have been received and a balance due statement. The balance must be paid no later than three weeks prior to the start of the session.
    • A late fee of 1.5% per month (minimum of $25) will be applied to any balance that is unpaid 30 days after it is due.
